Every Michigan driver knows the first real snow reveals every weak point a car has. This is the checklist our techs run on their own cars every fall.
Cold cuts a battery's cranking power by 30–50%. A battery that starts fine at 60°F can quit at 10°F, and most give little warning. If yours is 4+ years old, get it tested — battery and charging tests are free at all nine of our shops.
Snow traction lives in tread depth: 6/32" or better is where you want to be (see the penny test guide). Pressure drops about 1 PSI per 10°F — the "low tire" light in the first cold snap is usually physics, but check for nails anyway.
Coolant should protect to at least -30°F — we test it in seconds. Switch washer fluid to winter formula (summer fluid freezes on the glass at speed). If your oil change is close, do it before the freeze.
Wiper blades older than a year smear exactly when you need them. Weak cabin heat or slow defrost can be an early heater-core or thermostat symptom — cheaper to fix in October than January.
Any pull, pulse, or noise gets worse on ice. A free brake check now beats discovering the problem on an off-ramp in December.
Jumper cables or a jump pack, small shovel, ice scraper, blanket, gloves, phone cable, and a bag of sand or kitty litter for traction. Ten dollars of kit has saved a thousand Michigan evenings.
